Storm water pollution is a chronic environmental problem in cities, where it’s hard to catch all the polluted run-off and treat it before it makes its way into local waterways. When rain water hits pavement and other surfaces, it picks up petrochemicals, plastics and metals from cars, trucks and the rest of the cityscape.

But the LilyPad can treat all of those pollutants so they don’t impact aquatic life once the water reaches rivers and streams. And it could even be placed on the waterway itself to reduce existing pollution.

Municipalities are interested in the technology because it could lead to decentralized treatment of stormwater, potentially diverting millions of gallons from entering water treatment facilities. This could save cities money and reduce the incidence of combined sewer overflows when treatment facilities are overwhelmed during high water events.

The LilyPad system uses a patented nanotechnology-coated mesh activated by sunlight to purify water, using 5 simultaneous processes to destroy the broadest range of contaminants, effectively removing them from the environment, in a self-cleaning eco-friendly process:

Since the nanotechnology is not consumed by these reactions, and only metals remain on the catalyst over time, the media does not need to be replaced.  Only a periodic deionizing rinse to disinfect the LilyPad is necessary to maintain its life span and effectiveness. The LilyPad will last for many years and will not have to be replaced as often as other water purification products, while providing superior innovative and environment-friendly effects.

This revolutionary award-winning technology is incorporated into thin, 1 meter round pads that float a few inches below the surface of contaminated water, without using chemicals, consumables, or power.  The LilyPad is able to remove organic contaminants, microorganisms, and heavy metals, including all the revolting stuff in runoff from roadways — plastics, metals, bacteria, pesticides, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, etc. — while just lying there absorbing the UV energy of the sun, even on cloudy days.

The Nanotechnology-coated mesh destroys organic contaminants found in virtually all water sources – trace amounts of heavy metals are removed; bacteria, viruses and protozoa are sterilized.

1 square meter of LilyPad surface area will provide 90% removal of contaminants in 1 cubic meter of water in 1 day time of sunshine. Added exposure of 10 days will provide 99% removal of contaminants.
